![]() As this street was often confused with Union Street, South Trenton, the name was changed to Bank Street because of the State Bank that stood on the site of St. This thoroughfare was once called Union Street. He retired from business about the time of the Civil War. For a number of years he conducted the American Star Anvil Works. Atterbury, a prominent resident of the town. The street was appropriately named for the famous Trenton Academy which opened early in the century and occupied the site of the present public library, The Trenton Academy played a great part in moulding the lives of many young men of the city and it stands out historically as one of the fine educational institutions of the country. It was in the early days of the Republic that Academy Street was changed from Fourth Street, in keeping with the changes of other numbered streets in the centre of the city. William Henry Allen won distinction in 1812 as First Lieutenant of the frigate United States in the action with the Macedonian. This is supported in part by Montgomery Street, which bears the name of Richard Montgomery, who was also a noted naval officer. ![]() The origin of its present name is in doubt, but there is reason to believe that it stands for William Henry Allen, a distinguished American naval officer. When this thoroughfare was laid out it was named Woodruff Street in honor of Mayor Aaron D. Teunon gave this thoroughfare its present name. 1934Ībernathy Drive memorializes the name of Mr. Source is indicated as the State Gazette, Sept.
